Ulangan 32:13

32:13 He enabled him ¹  to travel over the high terrain of the land,

and he ate of the produce of the fields.

He provided honey for him from the cliffs, ² 

and olive oil ³  from the hardest of ⁴  rocks, ⁵

32:1 Listen, O heavens, and I will speak;

hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.

14:25 Now the whole army ⁶  entered the forest and there was honey on the ground. ⁷  14:26 When the army entered the forest, they saw ⁸  the honey flowing, but no one ate any of it, ⁹  for the army was afraid of the oath. 14:27 But Jonathan had not heard about the oath his father had made the army take. He extended the end of his staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb. When he ate it, ¹⁰  his eyes gleamed. ¹¹ 

[32:13]  ¹ tn The form of the suffix on this verbal form indicates that the verb is a preterite, not an imperfect. As such it simply states the action factually. Note as well the preterites with vav (ו) consecutive that follow in the verse.

[32:13]  ² tn Heb “he made him suck honey from the rock.”

[32:13]  ³ tn Heb “oil,” but this probably refers to olive oil; see note on the word “rock” at the end of this verse.

[32:13]  ⁴ tn Heb “flinty.”

[32:13]  ⁵ sn Olive oil from rock probably suggests olive trees growing on rocky ledges and yet doing so productively. See E. H. Merrill, Deuteronomy (NAC), 415; cf. TEV “their olive trees flourished in stony ground.”

[14:25]  ⁶ tn Heb “all the land.”

[14:25]  ⁷ tn Heb “the surface of the field.”

[14:26]  ⁸ tn Heb “and the army entered the forest, and look!”

[14:26]  ⁹ tn Heb “and there was no one putting his hand to his mouth.”

[14:27]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “and he returned his hand to his mouth.”

[14:27]  ¹¹ tc The translation follows the Qere and several medieval Hebrew mss in reading “gleamed,” rather than the Kethib, “saw.”
